How to import a terminology to Text United from a .csv file using the desktop app
This view helps you to manage terminology repositories in Text United.
The master repository contains terms which you imported from TBX or CSV files and all terms merged from projects' glossaries (after project's completion). In case someone shares a terminology repository with you, it will be on this list as well.
Here, you can also create a brand new repository, import or export data, copy, or delete the repository, see its properties or grant access to it.
To import your own terminology kept in a CSV file, navigate to Terminology Repositories in the Workplace pane.
Select from Terminology Repositories your existing master repository to which you want to add new data.
If you want to import terms to an empty repository, you should create a new one by clicking New in the ribbon.
Once a repository is selected on the list, click Import CSV
Select a csv file and click Open
CSV is a simple file format used to store tabular data, such as a spreadsheet. Files in the CSV format can be imported to and exported from programs that store data in tables, such as Microsoft Excel or OpenOffice Calc. CSV stands for "comma-separated values".
In the left area you will see a preview of the file after applying a Column separator. CSV files are typically separated by a comma, but the separator can also be a semicolon, colon, tab, pipe.
If your table doesn't look right and it doesn't have the right number of columns, you probably need to change the Column Separator.
In the right side of the window is a list of all the languages. Choose the languages which your terminology is in and if the table on the left looks appropriately separated, click NEXT.
This is where you map your existing columns.
Languages - assign the appropriate language to each column, in this case there are two languages English and German. From the dropdown list you will have to select the column name that contains the concepts in the selected language.
Abbreviation - if your csv file includes abbreviations for the terms, assign the right column for each language (in this case the column name for abbreviation is abbreviation-EN and abbreviation-DE)
Additionally, if your csv file contains terms' descriptions, notes, usage directions and examples, you can assign each column here.
From here you can select the Domain of your imported terminology (Architecture, Law, Marketing, Education etc...).
Now you can choose what happens in the case you are adding terms to an existing terminology repository in case of conflicts....
But first, a short definition. A 'concept' is a collection of translations with some descriptions and picture of an 'object'. For instance a 'mobile phone' can be a concept.
Now we can proceed to Merge Settings.
In case of a conflict during the import, the system can:
Merge concepts - will import source and merge with existing translations, additionally you can set the new imported translations as default
Overwrite existing translations and descriptions with the new data
Finally click next and you can preview your terminology table. If everything looks fine, click Import. Depending on how many terms are in the file, importing might take a while.
